FamiTracker

on Fri Sep 01, 2017 9:02 pm
Ever heard a Nintendo Entertainment System styled track on YouTube or the likes and wondered how on Earth the uploader got her or his remix to sound so incredibly authentic?  Well this isn't always the case, but one way that such an astounding feat can be achieved is via an NES fan made program for Windows, called "FamiTracker".  The name comes from "Famicom", the Japanese name for the NES that is a portmanteau of:
ファミリー (Family)
and
コンピューター (Computer);
and "Tracker", a classic form of music sequencing software that was originally used on retro computers that only had a small number of PCM sample channels that could play simultaneously solely using their default soundchips.

The FamiTracker application itself is a tool that songwriters and composers can use to perfectly emulate and directly manipulate both the sounds the NES could make, and its exact audio specifications.  Therefore, as long as one didn't hack the program and enable it to do more than an actual NES could do back in the eighties, he or she could even export her or his song to an NSF (Nintendo Sound File [slash Format {I don't remember right now}]), put it on a cartridge using special hardware, and hear how it would sound on the real life console!

Oh, and don't worry, WAV exporting is also available, especially for those of us that like to share our songs with others whom may not possess the software via which they were created.

If you're a fan of FamiTracker music, or even someone who has created some yourself, don't be afraid to share a link to your creation!  I'll accept WAV, FTM, (the official Famitracker ProJect file extension), and FTI (FamiTracker instrument files).

You may also put your WAV file into the "Transition Sound" slot of a PowerPoint file, and then add your own animations as a sort of visualizer!  If you want to get really creative, you can even add media controls to your PPT, so that we can play, pause, and stop your media at will!

No MP3's though; those things are most known for causing viruses, and therefore, they freak me out the most!

"PoKéMoN SUN And PoKéMoN MOON - Super Music Collection - "Route 1 On Melemele Island" - Official JadeJohnson Records FamiTracker Eight Bit Cover (1×2A03 + 5×VRC7)

on Fri Sep 01, 2017 10:48 pm
As those of you know whom have mastered FamiTracker inside and out, as I myself have, composers are able to emulate not only the sound of the NES's default SoundChip, but also any of the official expansion audio hardware that was worked into the actual cartridges of some of its licensed games.

One of these chips, the "Konami® VRC7™", was a revolutionary device that enabled the system to sound like the "SEGA® GENESIS™"!  Sure, in FamiTracker, you can only emulate one instrument per riff on all six FM Synthesis channels, but as I later discovered, although you can't make an NSF file this way, you CAN (indirectly) use multiple instruments on as many channels as you want, even more than six, by putting each VRC7 riff in the appropriate place in another song (with the exact same speed, row count, frame count, and tempo settings as the entirety of your original song) within the same main ProJect's FTM file.

Aha!  Now THERE's something I bet you've never tried doing in FT, eh?  As I said before, you can't make an NSF file this way, but you can make a pretty rad sounding WAV mashup like that (by mixing all of the tracks down to a single track); THAT's for CERTAIN!

Here, check it out for yourself; and "HAPPY JADING!™"

I'll openly admit that it did take me five tries to get this song cover right, as you'll be able to tell by the "V5" in the filename, but I couldn't be ANY HAPPIER with this cover.  I didn't need more than ONE SONG in my ProJect file, and yet LISTEN to it!  It sounds like the ACTUAL SONG!  Well, minus the drumline.  I wanted to give it a house remix effect, as you can easily hear.

You can download the track here!

But seriously!  What do you think about it?  Isn't it TOTALLY AWESOME!?
